How to make Marking Gauges | Paul Sellers

A good video as usual and very informative, you did do onething that I thought was a little off and that is using a marking guage to make a marking gauge.

I make a simpler wedge design that fits the hand more naturally and isn’t complicated. I could make a video, but no one would watch it.

I also shape the scribe to be a chisel edge.

The flat side of the chisel shaped point is on the fence side so when you put a piece of wood between the point and the fence, it is more accurately replicating that width.

I also round the shape so it slides over cross grain easier.

  9. Yes, you are the senior surgeon. And we are thw very junior dr's.

  10. Hi Paul, I've watched three quarters the way though, enjoyed all of it. I'm having a go at restoring vintage tools, and working on a wooden plain at the mo. But I want to try making a guage. Yeah I could pick one up for a fiver, but where's the fun in that. I also saw your from Cheshire, in from Staffordshire, but living in Cornwall. Keep up the fantastic work bud.

  11. Wouldn’t it be easier to do the marking gauge in a lathe? Lol

A 2 1/2 hour video, keeping it interesting all along. Thanks for sharing.

At 51 minutes in, when you are measuring with the steel rule, you touch your pinky to the end of the rule to verify that it's plumb with the piece. That's one of the kinds of trick I like to learn from your videos.

These just made me realize rubbing a speed square or the hook of a tape measure on a board is cool on the jobsite, but nothing to brag about to a real carpenter. I wonder if I could make one of these small enough to fit in a toolbag, but still cool enough to make someone jealous lol

  20. Two and a half hours to show someone how to put a nail through a piece of wood. SMH

  21. Always thought this design could be better – round dowel for the stem. plane a flat surface, drill a hole the same diameter in the head Which is thicker then usual (probably twice as thick) make a wedge from an off cut of the dowel….. no need for complicated weird shapes.

  22. Way too long!

    Paul is an international treasure!

  24. I've seen this video posted for a while and always thought it was too long to watch but this evening, I got a couple of bottles of beer and thought 'Right, I'm doing this' and watched from start to finish in one sitting. Excellent!
